Minister Kajzer at the 81st UN General Assembly: security, the economy and effective multilateralism
SLOVENIA, September 23 - Minister Kajzer began his programme in New York by meeting with the Slovenian community. He highlighted the importance of preserving the Slovene language and identity and maintaining ties with the homeland. He also discussed the role of Slovenians in the United States in fostering closer ties between the two countries. On Sunday, 20 September, he attended a solemn Mass at the Slovenian Church of St Cyril, led by the Archbishop of Ljubljana, Stanislav Zore, followed by a gathering of the Slovenian community.
As part of his political discussions, Minister Kajzer met Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand. They confirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations and discussed economic cooperation, including within the framework of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Minister Kajzer then exchanged views with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau on EU-US relations, European competitiveness and economic challenges relating to China and highlighted Slovenia’s interest in participating in the Pax Silica initiative. Economic and technological diplomacy also took centre stage during the meeting with Nick Tzitzon, Vice Chairman of ServiceNow. Their discussion focused on digitalisation, artificial intelligence, cyber security and the development of expertise, as well as opportunities for further cooperation with Slovenia. Minister Kajzer also met Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, a representative of democratic Belarus, to discuss the democratic future of Belarus, the situation of the Belarusian opposition and the broader security implications of the situation in the country. Slovenia continues to support the Belarusian people and democratic forces.
Bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of partner countries form an important part of the Minister’s programme. Minister Kajzer and Kazakhstan’s new Foreign Minister, Mukhtar Tleuberdi, discussed further strengthening political and economic cooperation and preparations for the next meeting of the bilateral Joint Economic Commission. The Slovenian Minister also invited his counterpart to visit Slovenia. With the Qatari Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi, he discussed the continuation of political dialogue, the strengthening of economic and transport cooperation and the establishment of a direct air link. Minister Kajzer emphasised the importance of Qatar’s constructive mediating role in the region.
Minister Kajzer held a meeting with the President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Dr Khalilur Rahman, to discuss UN reform, strengthening the role of the General Assembly and the need to restore confidence in effective multilateralism. The President of the General Assembly has identified making the multilateral system more effective and responsive as key objectives of his term of office. Regarding humanitarian issues and international law, the Minister discussed the protection of civilians, respect for international humanitarian law and Slovenia’s ongoing cooperation with the Committee with the President of the ICRC, Mirjana Spoljaric Egger.
The Minister also met with representatives of the American Jewish Committee to discuss combating antisemitism, preserving the memory of the Holocaust, Slovenia’s participation in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and the implementation of its national strategy to combat antisemitism until 2033.
He also took part in a high-level side event, “Global Food Security and the Black Sea”. Slovenia supports the call for a moratorium on attacks on infrastructure and vessels used to export Ukrainian grain, as safe maritime routes directly affect food security in the world’s most vulnerable regions. As part of the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative, Slovenia has contributed 4.8 million euros between 2022 and 2026.
Slovenia’s activities in New York reflect its key priorities for the 81st session of the General Assembly: international peace and security; respect for international law and the protection of civilians; human rights and democracy; sustainable development; and a more effective and responsive multilateral system. As a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2026–2028 term, Slovenia is committed to a UN system that delivers concrete results in the face of ever-increasing geopolitical and global challenges.
